Chapter 22

Nine days. Nine days of silence, of unanswered texts, and missed calls. All he’d gotten from her in that time was one text message the night of their fight.

Ella: I’m home safe.

Leaning against the wall outside of B for Brazil, Dax dialled her number for the second time that day. She had made an art of avoiding him.

Voicemail.

He hung up and shoved the phone back into his pocket just as Miller exited the cafe, eyeing him suspiciously.

‘Tell me you didn’t call her again.’

‘Would it kill her to answer?’

‘All you need to do now is start driving past her house at night to check if her car’s in the driveway and you get the official title of stalker.’

Dax pushed off the wall. ‘She won’t give me a chance to explain.’

‘Explain what? She already knows our family created a tidal wave and aimed it at her employer. What else are you going to say?’ Miller handed him a coffee, and they began walking back towards the site. ‘You can’t expect her to understand. I hate to say it, but Frankie’s actually right on this one. She’s not part of our world.’

‘Don’t praise Frankie right now. She’s the reason I’m in this situation.’

Miller’s gaze slid to him. ‘You can’t be pissed at her forever.’

‘Challenge accepted.’

Miller laughed quietly into his drink. ‘We’re heading out tonight, and you’re coming with us. It might take your mind off her for a bit.’

Nothing had managed to distract him so far. ‘Not really in the mood.’

‘I’m not asking, brother.’ He kept his eyes ahead. ‘And make sure you swim beforehand.’
